Design duo Robert and Cortney Novogratz dish on the decor they created at Hotel Dylan in Woodstock, New York.

“Peace. Love. Stay.” That’s the motto at the recently opened Hotel Dylan in Woodstock, New York. The lodging delivers a hippie vibe with a chic twist, thanks to designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz. “We definitely wanted to pay homage to Woodstock,” the duo says of the rooms they decorated with photos of rock stars, salvaged-wood bed frames, and pillows emblazoned with “Love Is All You Need.” “There is so much history—musically, artistically, culturally—but it’s not like a theme park.” Here are a few of their styling secrets:
How do you mix in old pieces and still have the decor feel fresh?
We like using new as the canvas and juxtaposing that by bringing in vintage, since those are generally one-of-a-kind pieces. At Hotel Dylan, for instance, we had fun with old vinyl record players (and as a result of working on this project, we’re both addicted to them again).
What’s the story behind the nightstands, with their woven-yarn doors?
We purchased them, and when they arrived, they felt too bulky, cold, and masculine. So we spray painted them and bombed them with yarn for a softer, chic-er look.
So many fun pillows! Do you have any tips for mixing prints?
Generally speaking, dots need to connect with different patterns. But with pillows, you can go crazy. We like fun, colorful ones and love word play.
